Human Anatomy, Set of 6
A boxed set of six blank Human Anatomy note cards with matching envelopes.
Each image was adapted from illustrations in the seminal work on women's health "Die Frau als Hausärztin" by Doctor Anna Fischer Dückelman.
The book was initially published in 1901 and republished in this lavishly illustrated edition in 1913. This book was one of the very first to discuss women's health as its own issue and discussed such taboo subjects as masturbation and the dangers of tight-laced corsetry. Above all, it included truly masterful illustrations of the human body.
A select group of these gruesome images have been heavily altered to create new works of art available exclusively from the Divine Iguana. The images were carefully edited, meticulously colored, layered and restored to create these lush note cards. Details of antique parchment papers and border ornaments scanned from our private collection of antique books add to the Victorian appeal.

Each image was adapted from antique illustrations depicting the arcane science of Phrenology, which posited that temperament, intellect, and disposition could be determined by the shape of the skull. Phrenology has long been discredited as a science, but there is still much interest in the charts and illustrations designed for its implementation.
